{Dog} Food for the Soul

What does Chloe Clementine eat? Well when I first got Chloe, she ate Blue Buffalo Wilderness kibble, various treats, a few bites of U.S. Border fajita chicken, and eggs. Sounds like a great diet, right? Well she loved it. Once she got pancreatitis, we had to go strictly to a low-fat diet. This meant changing to Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight kibble, low fat treats, and zero hooman food.

Chloe loves her new kibble, but she misses her fajita chicken from U.S. Border (this is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Nashville). She still gets a small amount of egg if she needs to take medicine, but this is very rare.

The reason we originally started on Blue Buffalo was because of the ingredients. Some people say high-end kibble is the same as cheap brands, but when you look at the ingredient label that is just not true. I scoured every ingredient label in Petco before Chloe even came to Nashville. The first 3-5 ingredients are a telltale sign of how good the dog food is. If your dog must be on a low-fat diet, like Chloe, look at the guaranteed analysis. This will tell you the “crude fat min %.” I won’t give Chloe anything that is above 3% crude fat.

Some people also mention a “grain free” diet for pups. While this could be beneficial for some dogs, our vet told us that it really is more of a marketing strategy rather that something that really benefits your pup’s health. Blue Buffalo doesn’t seem to make a combination of “grain free” and healthy weight, so we opted for the more important option, the “healthy weight.”

My last little tip about finding the right kibble is to avoid meat by-products. Although there is some debate about meat by-products, when it comes to my pup, I’m not taking any chances!
